Apple

On the slopes of Dukes hill rises an apple orchard with almost 100 hectares, which was planted in stages from 2011. to 2018.

It is one of the largest modern apple orchards in the region. Planted with the newest production technology and with all necessary infrastructure, such as hail and frost protection systems, computer-controlled irrigation and fertirigation.

With 4,000-6,500 trees per hectare, we produce 8,000 tons of top quality apples, including new licensed selections of Gala, Golden and Red Delicious, Jonagored, Granny Smith, Braeburn and Fuji varieties.

Green, yellow or red…
sweet or sour … which one is yours ?

Even though it is an old variety, it was only after its introduction from Asia that the richness of its special taste was discovered by consumers around the world. It has become one of the favorite varieties with a trend of strong growth. It has a very specific crispy meat structure, it is mostly red with regular stripes or dark red, and due to its somewhat flattened shape, this variety already differs from the others at first glance. It is one of the largest apples that is usually harvested end of October or in beginning of November. The characteristic of the flesh of this variety is the appearance of transparent circles on the cross-section, which in some countries, such as Japan, is considered a premium feature of the fruit. The Fuji variety has an extremely large number of selections, but over time, the best of them stood out due to their organoleptic and visual properties. Thus, our production includes probably the most famous Fuji Fubrax selection, which is part of the KIKU brand known around the world.

Golden delicious is one of the oldest and most popular apple varieties. Depending on the selection and the climate, it is green to yellow in color, very sweet and has a recognizable appearance and sometimes with a characteristic “rust”, which is also its trademark.

A favorite around the world, it is an integral part of the apple offer in every market.

This medium-sized to large variety of apple, in addition to fresh consumption, is also often used to make desserts due to the amount of sugar and specific taste. On the market, we usually distinguish 2 most famous selections of golden delicious, namely Klon B and Reinders. Clone B is characterized by a bright yellow color and “rustiness” which is considered premium fruit in some countries, however most markets require clean fruits without pronounced lenticels and “rustiness” as well as green to green-yellow fruit color. Our company produces golden delicious reinders.

Gala is the earliest summer apple variety. Depending on the clonal selection, climate area and flowering time, this variety is harvested from August 10th until September 10th.

It is known for its intensive red color, very sweet taste and moderately large to small fruits.

Gala is a “summer apple”, however, with available storage technologies, it is extremely well preserved, so consumers can enjoy its crisp and rich taste throughout the year.

All over the world it is one of the most sought-after apples, especially the smaller fruits that are consumed as a “snack” food with high added value and as a short refreshment during the day. There are various selections of gala, but the most important is the division into striped and dark colored ones. Considering the export orientation of our company and the different preferences of our customers, we produce the best striped selections such as Gale Schniga Schnico and Gale Royal Beaut Proselect as well as the newest selection of dark colored gala like Gala Schniga Schnicored.

Red delicious as a dessert apple is a favorite among consumers with a specific taste for sweet apples and has a special crunchy structure. It is one of the most beautiful apple varieties and stands out for its special shape and dark color over the entire fruit. For this reason, it is also known as a decorative apple because it often serves as a kind of decorative element in the room. As with other varieties, there are various selections of this variety, however, in recent times, the most common ones are those that are colored very early and intensively over the entire apple surface. Taking into account the preferences of our customers and the requirements for a high coloration with dark red color of the fruit, we produce one of the highest quality selections Red Cap Valtod, which is characterized by a high percentage of coloration of the entire fruit surface and dark red color, but also by characteristic shape of this variety, which is well recognized on the market.

Granny smith is the only sour eating apple. It has a characteristic appearance, dark to light green, with more or less accentuated white lenticels and is very popular among consumers who do not prefer sweet taste of apples but rather the specific feeling of refreshment that this variety provides. Although it is a very compact and stable variety for storage due to its characteristics and meat structure, it still requires the use of newest storage technologies so that its fruit can be consumed without change throughout the year. It is an extremely sought-after variety for making juices, smoothies and cakes because it gives drinks and desserts a fresh and slightly sour taste. As such a unique sour apple, it is in demand in all world markets, some of which prefer shiny waxed fruits, which our company also offers with “high gloss” edible wax in a thin coating.

Jonagored and Jonagold are actually the same variety family of apples. The difference is only in the time of ripening and the color structure of the fruit, which can be striped or darker colored without structure. This is one of the largest apple varieties and is usually harvested at the beginning or middle of October. It is not uncommon for consumers to mix it up with Idared variety for its appearance, however, in terms of its taste and organoleptic properties, this is a far better and tastier variety than Idared. Jonagored is an exceptional apple, both according to its sour-sweet taste and according to its nutritional values, i.e. the amount of antioxidants it contains. Due to its characteristics, especially the bigger size of the fruit, it is a favorite consumer variety of Central and Eastern Europe. We are currently producing one of the best selections of striped Jonagored – Morrens Jonagored Supra, but also in Jonagold – Jonagod Dacosta

Braeburn is a variety with smaller fruits, a specific reddish color and an even more special taste and aroma. Its meat is extremely firm and crunchy, and its skin is smooth. The taste is very specific and quite different from all other varieties, and the aroma of this variety is truly unique. This is one of the varieties that consumers remain faithful to throughout their lives precisely because of the special organoleptic properties it possesses. The largest European consumption as well as production of this variety is in Germany, while this apple is often used not only for fresh consumption but also for making juices due to its extremely attractive aroma. This variety is very demanding to preserve and requires specific regimes and protocols in long-term storage, especially because due to its characteristics it is not suitable for use of Smartfresh.

Nectarine

The production of this delicious summer fruit on almost 20 hectares takes place on Dukes hill, where juicy Baranja nectarines grow bathed in the sun. Although in this area of the European Southeast, the cultivation of stone fruit species is threatened by cold winters and frosty springs, the microlocation of Dukes hill is ideal for cultivation and because of the altitude, sloping terrain and wind rose, nectarine flowers in spring withstand cold weather, and the number of sunny hours that can be compared to Mediterranean climate, gives the fruit all necessary strength for growth and ripening, as well as an exceptional aroma and sweet taste.

We produce 3 varieties, namely Ambra as the earliest, then Caldesi as exceptionally colored and the finest white flash nectarine, and finally Stark red gold as a large late summer variety with exceptional organoleptic properties.

Technology & infrastructure

With the advanced technology and a highly intensive planting modeled on South Tyrol, we have devoted special attention to investing in advanced infrastructure and safety of our fruit production.

With the advanced technology and a highly intensive planting modeled on South Tyrol, we have devoted special attention to investing in advanced infrastructure and safety of our fruit production.

Technologies that ensure the protection of our orchards from the ever-present climatic extremes are the base for any sustainable fruit production, but also for the continuity of yields, supply of our partners and market presence of our products around the world.

Therefore, we have provided our orchards with all the protection and technology they need.

Irrigation and feeding of the orchard is ensured in the optimal amount and dynamics by means of advanced computerized system for watering and fertirigation. In this way, our fruit trees and fruits receive the necessary daily amount of water and nutrients regardless of weather conditions.

To protect our orchard from hail, we provided protection with anti-hail nets, and from spring frosts with a frost protection system through icing of the orchard.

A sprinkler system above the fruit trees is responsible for refreshing the orchard in extremely hot summer periods.

In this way, our production is safe from all climate risks and we are able to produce and supply our partners with the desired quantity and quality of fresh fruit every year.

Highly intesive production

Our apple orchards were planted in accordance with modern principles of highly intensive production. Foundation for the continuity of high yields is a dense planting structure that, depending on the variety, varies from 3-3.2m between rows and 0.5-0.8m between trees in a row. This results in planting of 4,000 to even 6,500 apple trees per hectare.

In this way, the planting system adapted to each variety enables optimal growth and development of both plants and fruits, achieving high yields, larger fruit calibers and excellent coloring in red varieties.

Hail protection system

Our fruit orchards are equipped with a hail protection system which, in addition to its primary function of protecting fruits and trees from natural disasters (hail), also serves to protect fruits from sunburn or strong UV radiation during summer months.

High-quality nets for hail protection with their optimal shading function protect trees and fruits from loss of necessary humidity, but also allow the needed level of sunlight important for all processes that take place in the plant and fruit in their growth and development throughout the year.

Computer regulated irrigation and fertirigation

Our orchards are also equipped with very advanced system of computer-regulated drip irrigation, as well as fertigation, i.e. feeding fruit trees with necessary nutrients. In this way, the optimal amount of moisture in the soil and all necessary nutrients are ensured so that the fruit trees and fruits develop and grow smoothly. In addition, the mentioned systems provide protection against temperature stress, which otherwise during the hot months would significantly threaten the desired development of the fruit, its size, color, but also its quality and subsequent storage capacity.

The mentioned computer system for regulating irrigation and fertirigation works on the principle of recognizing certain conditions in the orchard and adequately programmed input of water or elements into the soil at precisely specified intervals and quantities and at precisely specified locations of the orchard (radio-signaling).

Frost protection system

Along with natural disasters such as drought, storms, hail, the most significant threat to every orchard is frost. Spring frosts are the main reason for the global reduction of annual fruit yields as well as their quality.

Therefore, in addition to hail protection, irrigation and fertirrgation systems, we have equipped our production with the most effective frost protection system. In the last 10 years or so, frost has become more the rule than the exception, so during early spring almost every season we protect the crop and the quality of our fruit production from frost with mentioned system.

This system/technology works in such a way that in the most sensitive phase of flowering or the formation of small fruits, when frost occurs (temperature below 0ºC), a large amount of previously accumulated water is sprinkled over the whole surface of the entire orchard.

In this way, ice forms on the trees, leaves, flowers or fruits, which releases a large amount of thermal energy that raises the temperature in the orchard, and in the case of a longer and stronger frost, the ice completely covers the flowers or fruits, thus physically protecting them from strong frost in the orchard. The same is called the “igloo” effect when the continuous formation of ice ensures that inside it the temperature is always around 0ºC with little variation. The aforementioned ensures that the temperature around the flower or fruit itself is always around zero, and in this way there is no freezing and deterioration of the fruit during formation.

In addition to protection against frost, the mentioned system is also used for sprinkler irrigation in the summer months when, due to major droughts, “drop by drop” irrigation is not enough and when we want to refresh the entire orchard and whole fruit trees with a larger amount of water. In addition to that, the system also helps in improving the red coloring of certain varieties by lowering the temperature in the orchard during the summer nights and thus creating the greatest possible difference between day and night temperatures, which difference is a needed for red coloring of the apple.

Quality & Safety

The quality of our products is our primary focus, but also our identification. Our apple production is based on the principles of advanced technology, in which we leave nothing to chance.

Quality standards

From pruning, thinning to watering and feeding our orchard, we do everything to make each fruit a perfect little piece of nature that we bring to your table. Modern agrotechnical measures and implemented technology as well as advanced infrastructure ensure the excellent health condition of the orchard, high yields and exceptional quality of produced fruit.

After the harvest, we keep the apple in ideal conditions of our new coldstore and packaging facility, where for next 12 months and until the new harvest, we keep the original freshness, quality and taste of the apple as if it had just been picked in the orchard.

It is precisely the high quality standard of our apples as well as the reliability of supply 365 days a year that stands behind our brand and what we are able to provide our partners with around the world.

Safety

The health safety of our fruit is extremely important to us. Fruit is one of the healthiest natural foods and must remain so after production. In accordance with all applicable European regulations and directives, our fruit is always completely healthy and in accordance with Regulation 396/2005 of the European Parliament and Council Directive 91/414/EEC.

In addition to working in accordance with the regulation on integrated protection standard, we also prove the above mentioned with national certificate
„Proven Quality“ and globally recognized GlobalGap certificate, which ensures that the course of our entire fruit production is in every respect, including health, in accordance with all necessary standards.
